DCA: Rania Jones

Post democrafest, sweaters and blue jeans were decorated with Scout-ified blue stickers reading “RJ for DCA.” The crown icon above the slogan belongs to queen Rania Jones, who printed out 300 stickers despite running unopposed as the Director of Committee Affairs.

Jones has been a Cabinet member as a Senate head and a committee head of Performing Arts and Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD). “She represents the very best of what the school is and has to offer,” Upper School Dean of Student Life and Faculty Advisor Joe Bruno said.

As SADD head, Jones kept the committee from impeachment. “I gained a new appreciation for the committees that aren’t written or created to succeed,” Jones said. “I love seeing committees like SAC and CTC and Environmental succeed and win the best committee every year, but at a certain point, what about the other committees who are barely getting by?”

Jones is also involved in school magazine “Scout,” Model United Nations, the Upper School Musical, and Grape Jam. “This year, I didn’t honestly consider that a lot and threw my name into so many things, and I ended up in a situation where I had so many big commitments and just barely made it by,” Jones said. “Next year, I’ve definitely made some decisions.”

“I’m pretty good at time management and I’m ready for the new work,” Jones added.

Among the decisions Jones had to make was whether or not to run for President. Jones said that because she knew that the presidential candidate Samantha Graines was interested in that office, she wouldn’t put herself in that race.

Jones said one reason she’s running unopposed may be a common understanding in her grade. “There’s a mutual, unspoken respect we all have for kids who you can tell are just so driven and so passionate about things,” Jones said. “We all understand the people who truly want the position and everybody knows that we’ll do a good job at this position.”

Building on that drive and passion is a key priority for Jones. “The biggest reason I want this is because so many students get involved and choose to run for stuff and then nothing ever happens.”
