This upcoming February, Firecakes Donuts is scheduled to open at 2453 N. Clark Street, in the space formerly occupied by Caribou Coffee and Fuel Station.

Currently, Firecakes has a location on Hubbard Street and a coffee and donut truck in Lincoln Park. The restaurant serves donuts and other delicacies with the most popular flavors being Butterscotch Praline, Classic Jelly, Malted Milk Bar, Chocolate Hazelnut Long John, and Almond Joi.

“I think that it’ll be a good place for advisories to visit for snacks and for students to go to during their break,” junior Elena Holceker said. “It’s also better than Dunkin’ Donuts and since Stan’s Donuts just opened but it’s farther away, this is good because it’s in the middle of both.”

Donut shops are popping up in new locations around the city. Stan’s Donuts, which opened a Lincoln Park location in October, has consistently had customers lining out the door and around the corner. Dunkin’ Donuts, on the corner of Clark and Belden since 2013, has attracted much of the Parker community as well as others in the Lincoln Park neighborhood.

The planned opening of Firecakes adds competition. There will now be three popular donut stores all competing in the neighborhood.

“I think that it will also be good for the neighborhood because there are a lot of buildings nearby,” junior Katrina Holceker said, “so people could go to Firecakes for dessert after dinner.”

64 students shared their thoughts on the donut shops through an online survey sent to the Upper school.

The most popular shop was Stan’s, as 52% of those who shared their opinions said that they prefered this shop to Dunkin’ and Firecakes.

The reasons why vary, as some feel that the donuts were better than Dunkin’ and many had not tried Firecakes. Some also liked the location of Stan’s, as it is located at a busy intersection.

Dunkin’ came in second place, with 30% of respondents preferring their donuts above both Stan’s and Firecakes.

Members of the upper school enjoyed the prices and the location, as it is very close to school. Some had simply never tried the other two shops. Students also liked the taste of Dunkin’s donuts in general, saying that their taste was consistent.

Firecakes came in last place, with 18% of responses preferring Firecakes above the other two.

Few have learned about Firecakes, which explains the low ranking. Those who do prefer Firecakes enjoy the shop because they like the donuts and think their ice cream sandwiches are the perfect treat.
