A News Editor’s Opinion on Ways to Receive News
It is essential to keep yourself informed about the state of our changing world. However, because our digital world is expanding, people get news in countless ways, from websites to Instagram posts, podcasts, emails, and newspapers themselves. There are many ways to receive the news, and everybody can find a way that is best for them. Some are more visual, some you can listen to, and some are even sent straight to you. Here are some possible news sources, and remember, there are more than the ones . One of the most important things to keep in mind is that whichever way you want to receive your news, make sure your source is accurate and reliable.
Websites:
News sources often have a website where they upload all of their articles and online editions that a physical print copy might not include. You may come across some websites or news sources you need to subscribe to, however, many have student discounts that can be found on their websites. To get the top headlines of the day or for research for class, websites have stored numerous articles all ready for you! With websites you can google a specific topic and find it without searching through information.
Instagram posts (or other social media):
As students, our days are filled with homework, after school activities, jobs, and other commitments. However, in our busy days, it is important to make the time to see what our world is encountering. Instagram can help achieve this. News sources understand that people are busy, and they create posts that are quick, easy to understand, and are delivered straight to your feed. News sources like “The Washington Post” and “The New York Times” also include visuals in the posts that maximize the information. If you are looking for a way to receive news that comes to you and is easy to digest, follow some news sources!
Podcasts:
So much of our world is on a blue screen, but that doesn’t have to mean that keeping up with the news has to be on a blue screen. Listening to the news can also always be another option. Many news sources have a podcast that summarizes their top headlines and emerging stories. So on your next walk or commute, remember that listening to a podcast about the news is always an option. Some podcasts to get you started are “The Daily” by the “New York Times,” NPR, or “Pod Save America.”
Emails:
Receiving daily emails and newsletters are features that publications often have. As a student, I am constantly checking my email for homework assignments, schedules, and other communication. But mixed within emails for school, I can find daily emails from the “New York Times” that summarize the top headlines, include photos, and provide links to a longer article if I want to keep reading. Signing up for this programming allows one to read the news in a brief format that is sent straight to you, keeping you up to date.
The Parker Weekly:
And finally, my favorite way to receive news, both source and format: The Parker Weekly. The Parker Weekly has articles about Parker and the world around us! Plus, you don’t always have to wait for every issue release for a print copy. “The Parker Weekly” runs online all the time! If you want to know your school, “The Parker Weekly” covers content ranging from news about Chicago to the ongoing events of the Parker halls and how they both connect to each other.
