My sabbatical year of 2023-2024 was a terrific experience that allowed me to dive into new interests, recharge, and appreciate the simple joys of life. One of the highlights was attending Triton College in River Grove, Illinois, where I enrolled in two insightful nutritional classes. At the end of each chapter, we were assessed through comprehensive tests, which helped me reinforce my understanding of the material. I completed both courses and received certificates as a testament to my dedication and learning.
These classes shed light on the complex processes involved in food production, the nutritional value of various foods, and the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. I gained a deeper understanding of how foods are processed, from the farm to the grocery store. This knowledge empowers me to make more informed choices about my diet and prioritize whole, unprocessed foods. The classes also emphasized the significance of hydration and adequate sleep, both essential for optimal health and well-being.
Beyond the classroom, I was intrigued by the realities of the meat industry. Learning about the processes involved in raising and slaughtering animals brought a new perspective to my food consumption. It also increased my appreciation for the hard work of farmers and the complex systems that ensure a steady food supply.
In addition to my academic pursuits, I had the opportunity to revisit the beautiful campus of Duke University, in Durham, North Carolina. Having previously visited in November 1991, I was eager to experience the same inspiring atmosphere that had captivated me years ago. Duke’s stunning architecture, vibrant campus life, and commitment to academic excellence continue to make it a truly special place.
Taking a sabbatical leave also provided me with the much-needed opportunity to recharge and reconnect with my loved ones. I was able to travel, relax, and spend quality time with my immediate family and my ageless mother, who is 87 years young. These experiences were invaluable in fostering a sense of peace and contentment.
My sabbatical year was made even more memorable by the opportunity to celebrate my daughter Ashley’s graduation from Texas Southern University, Summa Cum Laude with a degree in Administration of Justice. Ashley graduated from Francis W. Parker School in 2020. To mark this significant milestone, our family traveled to Houston to join Ashley and her fellow graduates at the commencement ceremony. It was a joyous occasion filled with pride and celebration and a fitting end to a year of personal and professional growth.
I believe every faculty member working at this wonderful institution should consider taking a sabbatical leave if possible. Such a break can offer a much-needed halt from the demands of daily work, allowing for personal and professional growth. It can also provide a unique opportunity to explore new interests, gain new perspectives, and return to the classroom with renewed enthusiasm.
My sabbatical year was a journey of self-discovery, learning, and renewal. Through my experiences at Triton College, my visit to Duke University, and my time spent with loved ones, I gained a deeper appreciation for the importance of health, education, and personal well-being. I encourage all faculty members to consider taking a sabbatical to recharge their batteries, explore new horizons, and return to their work with renewed vigor. As the saying goes, “You can’t pour from an empty cup.” By taking care of ourselves, we are better equipped to serve our students and contribute to the success of our institution.
