Entering high school can be a frightening and intimidating experience. However, joining one of Parker’s athletics teams can make the process so much easier.
I joined the Parker Field Hockey team, and though the first three weeks of preseason in August were challenging, we remained united. Even during the toughest morning runs and the hottest afternoon scrimmages, we bonded through the beauty of the sport. The upperclassmen were able to get to know all the freshmen and new girls coming into high school and the more experienced players helped guide and teach the new players skills and how to become a more effective team member.
The pasta dinner, the night before Homecoming, a tradition, was an amazing and fun night for all the girls to come together and hangout away from the field. On Homecoming, the JV and Varsity field hockey teams played hard, but unfortunately lost both games to Latin, our biggest rival. Although it was disappointing to lose, it was incredible how we didn’t lose our spirit, but instead embraced each other and committed to play harder next time. The following weekend, JV field hockey claimed victory over Latin at their homecoming game, while varsity fought hard but fell in double overtime.
Playing a team sport such as field hockey offers a sense of accomplishment and personal reward. During the school season, JV and Varsity practice together and work to build teamwork, even though we’re on different skill level teams. Joining the field hockey team also teaches the players time management and how to use time wisely. As a freshman not looking to get recruited by a D1 university, I get to use my time with the team as a way to build a wider network of incredible girls that I don’t see in my classes. I have built relationships with the older girls, and it’s fun to see them in the Parker halls, ask them questions about classes, clubs and more. I also get to stay in shape and work hard.
Overall, playing field hockey as a freshman was one of the best choices I made, and it set me up for an incredible high school experience.
