The senior snack drawer. What’s in it? Is it candy, is it chips? This is a question a lot of Parker’s freshmen, sophomores, and juniors have had over the past few weeks. But, the only way to truly find out everything that the drawer contains is being a senior.
If you don’t already know, the senior snack drawer is a drawer in Mr. Bruno’s office full of students’ favorite snacks. However, it’s only accessible to the seniors. Throughout the day, the rest of the school watches as the seniors walk the halls with delicious snacks in their hand. How come only they get this luxury?
A few seniors shared their opinions of the Senior Snack Drawer.
“I love it,” senior Sloane Freese said, “and I do think it’s fair that only seniors get to use it. It’s a privilege that each grade gets in their last year of high school. It has such good snacks.”
“I think it’s great,” senior and Student Government President Ty Donath said. “The snack drawer is a nice break from school, and it gives seniors a nice little perk. It makes seniors feel appreciated, and it’s awesome to have a little sugar buzz during the day. I think this should stay as a senior-only thing. It’s not unique when all grades have it.”
Overall the seniors believe that the snack drawer is amazing and they love having it. They also think that it is good that it is only used by the seniors because it is a little way to take a break from the stress of the day, and enjoy their favorite snacks as a treat.
Although we know the seniors love the snack drawer, what about the rest of the high school?
“It is something to look forward to, and it’s a privilege you get when you’re a senior and you see everyone get it and now you finally get to use it too. I think that since they are under pressure about college that it’s fair they get this as a reward for their hard work. But yes, it’s annoying,” sophomore Sadie Graines said.
Junior Izzy Sager agreed with Graines. “I think the senior snack drawer is great,” Sager said. “The seniors work so hard on college applications and in school. I’m sure it’s especially reassuring that after all the hard work they put in, they know they have a quick treat in a convenient place: Mr. Bruno’s office.” Although the other grades sometimes wish they could use the snack drawer, the non-seniors look forward to when they become seniors.
“I started the senior snack drawer for the Class of 2023,” Bruno said. “I got the idea when a few of them would always come in and ask for snacks their junior year. I thought the drawer would be a fun way for me to get to know the seniors better before they graduate – and I was right. It’s a wonderful rally point and way to build community. The reason the drawer is in my office is because I started it and stocked it and managed it.”
What makes the snack drawer so great seems to be the variety. Some snacks reported are veggie straws, rice krispies, fruit roll ups, Pringles, energy bars, Chomps, fruit snacks, Sour Patch Kids, pretzels, and PopCorners.
The snack drawer is a privilege. Although everyone would love a snack drawer, it is understandable that it’s for the seniors only. Once you’re a senior, you can pick your favorite snack to enjoy.
