What Can’t He Do?

Robert Wilson Leads In-School Tutoring Programs for Upper School Students

Upper School math teacher Robert Wilson loves all things math and science, which is why he is so ecstatic for his new position in the Upper School. Starting this school year, Wilson has taken on the role as the math and science tutor for the high school, and he believes that he can have a great impact on the Upper School with his new position.

This year, Wilson will be available to all students seeking assistance with their studies, whether it is extra help on a concept or a quick drop by session to brush up on a topic before a test.

“I am ready for any and all questions that come my way,” Wilson said. “I saw a need for this position to be made at Parker because I saw that a sizeable amount of students were underperforming in the subjects of math and science. I concluded from student reflections that students often prefer to ask friends for help with their studies before going to their teachers.

“Often times students do not access the great talent from the teachers at Parker,” Wilson said. “I believe that students have only scratched the surface of all of the resources for help with their studies, and that not utilizing the teachers is an often overlooked method.”

Wilson believes that he knows enough about biology, chemistry, physics, as well as many topic in math to be able to give students the required assistance.

“You can come at me with some random thing about photosynthesis, or chemistry bonding, and I can do it,” Wilson said.

To set up an appointment with Wilson, students can go to the portal and find a time that works for them. “I have the same platform as Mr. McCaw when you go to change your schedule,” Wilson said. “There is an option to set up an appointment with me there.”

Wilson will have a packed schedule this year and it will be difficult for students to always find a time slot ahead of time that works for both Wilson and the student.

Wilson is also considering a ‘drop by’ format for sessions, because students do not always know when they are going to need help. No two students are the same, and not everyone needs regular weekly sessions to keep caught up with their studies. Often times students simply need a concept to be explained to them from a different perspective, or will just need a refresher before an exam.

Sophomore Lilly Satterfield is currently enrolled in Wilson’s Advanced Geometry class. “He is really articulate when explaining a new topic to us because we have never learned geometry before,Satterfield said. “Given that he’s my teacher I think that I will go to him for help a lot and, because he is a tutor, I think that will be even better,” Satterfield says.

Wilson is a respected teacher in the Upper School and lots of students hold high praise for him, including sophomore Jonah Gross, who is also in Wilson’s Advanced Geometry course. “He’s a smart teacher who knows when you’re doing something wrong,” Gross said. “He also knows how to guide you in the right direction so that you can understand why you got something wrong, instead of just feeding you answers.

No longer will students not have the necessary resources needed to perform well in their classes. Mr. Wilson will be taking on students at the start of the school year to begin his new position.
