In Response to “Unspoken Traditions”
As twilight approaches on the 2018 fall athletics season, it seems impossible not to reflect on all that embodies Parker athletics. One large aspect of the athletic experience here at Parker is that of team traditions. In reflecting on the current athletics season here at Parker and in response to Alex Ori’s recent article, “Unspoken Traditions” I wanted to take a moment to respond to the past, however also, look toward the future. As a former athlete, it is my opinion that team traditions are an integral and also memorable aspect of participation in athletics. With that said, be assured that the Parker athletics department does not condone hazing of any kind. The athletics department here at Parker is supportive of team traditions in which are appropriate, inclusive, and strive to achieve the goal of bringing teams closer together. As we look toward the future in an ever-evolving society, I challenge team leadership—both coaches and captains—to be intentional while planning team dinners, bonding experiences, etc. As we evolve as society, our traditions can, too. And as a former history teacher, remember this: we have the ability to be the change we wish to see. Hazing is a thing of the past. Let’s keep it that way here at Parker.
Keep those traditions that encourage positive growth.
Do away with those that do not.
Create new traditions that support positive lifelong memories.
