A Second Homecoming
Parker Basketball Preview
The sounds of balls bouncing, the squeaking of sneakers, and basketballs swishing through the net are all signs to the Parker community that basketball season is commencing. As the leaves start to fall off the trees and snow takes it place, the girls’ and boys’ basketball teams prepare for a highly anticipated season.
“Pre-season is going well for the girls and boys teams and it’s an essential part of the program and season,” Athletic Director Bobby Starks said. “Those early impressions help establish the climate and culture of what that team will look like.”
One of the most exciting aspects of the season is playing in the White Out and Blue Out games. “Winter has that component of the White Out and Blue Out games serving as a second homecoming.” Starks said. “It helps create an exciting environment when we play our rival, Latin.”
Many of the coaches and players are excited for the upcoming season. Coach Jerrick McGee of the boys’ basketball team said. “We are excited to repeat the success of last season because we made it to the championship game of the ISL last season for JV,” he said. “It was huge for Parker because the last time Parker made it to the Championship game was 2002. “ Parker in the past hasn’t performed well in the ISL the last few years on the varsity level. But with a new young team for varsity, things are bound to change. “Parker is striving to develop a winning culture. We can reach our goals but it’s gonna take time and hardwork.”
The girls team is also optimistic for the season. “I think this team is on the right track to success,” junior Estelle Heltzer said. “Everyday we come into practice ready to learn new material. The bond between our teammates is what makes the team so special to me.” With high hopes going into the season, the team feels confident. “I think our team is going to do great,” Heltzer said. “We have already improved so much from last year.”
At Parker, the White Out and Blue Out games against Latin are a big deal. They are the games that a lot of the Parker community looks forward to as Parker plays its big rival. Sophomore Noah Keim said, “The White Out and Blue Out games are games I really look forward to going to during the season.”
The stage is set for this big-time showcase at the Sullivan Athletic Center at Depaul University. Historically, the games are known for having a large turnout for the boys game, but not the girls. Many students and teachers are upset by turnout for the girls. “We work so hard and lack of turn out is very disappointing,” Heltzer said. “It feels unfair that the boys get a lot more attention between the two teams.”
Keim agrees. “I don’t think it’s fair, especially because the games usually are just as interesting and competitive,” Keim said. “I think it would be a good idea to do two separate games as that would also provide fans two more opportunities to come and support our school.”
Most recently, the girls’ team is coming off a victory against Senn and have started the season strong. As for the boys, they kick–off their season Thanksgiving weekend, as they will be playing in a tournament at Fenton High School. Don’t forget to go out and support the Colonels, as both teams are expecting great seasons.
