“A giant step for iPhone. A monumental leap for iPad.”

Apple displays these words on its website to describe the release of its most recent operating system, iOS 11. The software update, which is compatible with models of the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch, became available to download at 12 p.m. on Tuesday of last week.

The latest software improves aspects of previous versions, with iOS 11 including a more advanced Siri, a redesigned App Store, and a reorganized app drawer in “Messages,” which makes it easier to send emojis, stickers, and games.

“I think the new ‘Messages’ system is crazy, in a good way,” sophomore Isaac Warshaw said. “I opened it, and it showed me a billion different icons and things.”

More iOS 11 features include the “Files” app, the addition of camera filters, and the ability to customize settings shown in the Control Center. Also, iPad users can now access their Dock while in apps, as well as use the “Drag and Drop” tool, which allows users to have two apps open onscreen and transfer images, text, and files between them by simply moving their fingers.

“I really appreciate the changes they’re making,” sophomore Celeste Gerbaulet-Vanasse said, noting the new filters. “I’m happy the camera has gotten better.”

As a part of iOS 11, Apple has introduced the ARkit framework, which enables developers to create applications allowing users to pair pair their camera with other applications to experience and utilize the latest augmented reality technology.

Apple plans to continue enhancing the augmented reality capabilities of its upcoming products, including the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus and the iPhone X, to be released on September 22 and November 3 respectively.
