Democrat Jones Wins Alabama Senate Seat
Ruby Red Alabama Elects First Statewide Democrat in Over Twenty Years
Prosecutor Doug Jones, a democrat, defeated judge and alleged child molester Republican Roy Moore in an Alabama Special Senate Election to fill the vacant seat left by Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Tuesday. This recent upset cuts the Republicans’ Senate majority to just two seats, as the chamber sits at a 51-49 balance.
Roy Moore, who was accused of sexual assault—including one allegation against a 14-year-old girl—was endorsed by President Donald Trump. Supporting Republican Luther Strange in the primaries as well, Trump has witnessed both of the candidates he has endorsed lose. “I think it’s a defeat for Trump,” history teacher Daniel Greenstone said. “The fact that he wasn’t able to help Moore get elected is not a good sign of Trump’s influence with voters—even in deeply Republican states like Alabama.”
Math teacher Michelle Hirsch discussed the election in her statistics class. “It’s really, really hard to sort out what people are thinking because people are lying more to pollsters,” Hirsch said. “One reason that I thought for sure Roy Moore would win is ‘cause polls had him up by three percentage points. I actually thought that was a lowball. I thought he’d win by 10 percentage points.”
But Moore lost narrowly, which was in part a result of write-ins. 1.7% of the Alabama electorate wrote-in a candidate, which proved to be critical for Jones given his narrow margin of victory. “I think it’s likely that most of the write-in votes were Republicans who don’t want to vote Democrat,” Greenstone said, “but couldn’t bring themselves to vote for such an appalling character such as Roy Moore.”
With Moore’s loss, many are pointing to another sexual predator—one who sits in the oval office. Hirsch thinks that if the Harvey Weinstein incident occurred during the election, the allegations about Trump would have made more of a difference. “Everything seemed to change with the Harvey Weinstein thing,” Hirsch said. “It could be the timing.”
