There’s Always Next Year
Varsity Boys’ Soccer Loses in Super-Sectional, Remains Confident about Fall 2017
On Tuesday, October 25, the varsity boys’ soccer team traveled out to western suburban Lisle for their super-sectional game. It was chilly and spitting at Benedictine University, where the team was shut out 0-4 by Westchester’s St. Joseph High School. The loss marked the end of the season for the Colonels, who finished with an 11-7-2 record overall and as one of Illinois’ top eight boys’ soccer teams.
The team moved back down to IHSA Class 1A for this year’s State tournament after competing in 2A last year. The last time they won a super-sectional match and advanced to the State Championship was fall 2013, when they took third place.
Despite the heartbreaking loss, junior and co-captain Cameron Miller looks back on the season and the game positively. “We were really proud with how we rallied together toward the end of the year to make a deep run into the state tournament,” he said. “I was happy with how hard we played for the entirety of the game. Things just didn’t fall our way.”
With next season’s captains still up in the air, the team has time to reflect on the past fall and think about their hopes for next season. Freshman Tomas Catoggio said, “We hope next year, the freshmen work hard throughout the entire season.”
Miller is also optimistic. He said, “I think that our experience of going to super sectionals this year, coupled with some young underclassmen talent, will make for an exciting year.”
