Tillerson Fired

Mike Pompeo Becomes New Secretary of State

On Tuesday, March 13, President Donald Trump fired Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and replaced him with Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Mike Pompeo—who will be replaced in the CIA by Deputy Director of the CIA Gina Haspel. Haspel will serve as the first female leader of the agency.

Tillerson, a former oil and gas executive, found out the news by reading the following tweet on the President’s Twitter account.

According to Tillerson, Trump called him from Air Force One around 12:00 pm, over three hours after the tweet. Tillerson informed Trump that he would hand over his responsibilities to Deputy Secretary of State John Sullivan.

Under Tillerson, over 60% of the highest-ranking workers in the State Department resigned. Tillerson will leave Washington without any major accomplishments as a result of the fact that he was not an active participant in White House discussions. Soon after Tillerson announced that the Trump Administration would not try to remove Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, the United States bombed the dictator.

Conversely, Pompeo has a strong relationship with Trump.   “We’re always on the same wavelength,” Trump said. “The relationship has been very good. That’s what I need as secretary of state.”

Pompeo has supported the operation of the United States detention camp in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba and believes that Islamic fanaticism is one of the most significant threats facing America today. In addition, experts expect Haspel’s Senate confirmation to be considerably difficult because of her history with torture.
