Father Pfleger Comes to Parker

Father Michael Pfleger, famed activist and pastor of Chicago’s Saint Sabina Catholic Church, spoke to the junior class in the Harris Center on the morning of Wednesday, November 28th. Pfleger was invited to serve as the annual Henry David Thoreau Speaker as a component of the Civic Lab program.

George H.W. Bush Dies

41st President of the United States George H.W. Bush died on Friday, November 30. Bush, an experienced diplomat and legislator, led a coalition to eject Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein from the oil-rich country of Kuwait, signed the Americans with Disabilities Act, and led during the demolition of the Berlin Wall.

“He was the kind of politician we don’t see as much anymore. He wasn’t particularly ideological, but he was very pragmatic and practical and was dedicated to doing the right thing by his country,” Upper School history teacher, Dan Greenstone said.

Sen. Hyde-Smith Re-elected

In the Mississippi Senate runoff, Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith defeated former Secretary of Agriculture Mike Espy on Tuesday, November 27.

“Sadly, given steps taken to dismantle voting rights at the state level and by SCOTUS in Citizens United,” Bigelow said, “the cards were stacked against the Democrats in this state.”

Protests Break Out In France

Emmanuel Macron, current President of France, announced last month that a carbon (green) tax, as a part of his environmental policy strategy, would be effective January 1st. This decision caused widespread unrest among the citizens of France.
News of the protests have been heard all over the world, and even here at Parker. “I think it’s cool seeing that this is happening,” sophomore Zoey Blickstein said. “In history class, we were learning about the French Revolution, and it’s interesting to see the differences and similarities between what’s happening now and what happened during the French revolution.”
